Requirements for United States Citizenship

The benefits of becoming a United States citizen are immense. Citizenship means that the holder is entitled to all the rights that the county has to offer, including the right to vote. Because of the noted benefits that come with citizenship, it is an extensive and complicated process.

To become a citizen through naturalization, you must:

  • Have a green card (lawful permanent residence) in the United States for at least five years;
  • Live in the United States continuously for five years prior to application;
  • Be physically in the country for at least two and a half years before applying for citizenship;
  • Live in the area you are filing for at least three months;
  • Reach 18 years of age;
  • Have good moral standing and character;
  • Speak, read, and write in English;
  • File Form N-400 with all associated documents;
  • Pass a United States history and government exam; and
  • Swear a belief in the Constitution and loyalty to the U.S.
